From Garden Cities of To-Morrow to Social Cities for Today

The International Federation for Housing and Planning [IFHP] has its origins in the Garden City Movement. Back in the day a social, economic and environmental model for holistic communities.

Today – back to the future – as everybody is talking Sustainable Development Goals – IFHP has taken to heart that there are many in the field benchmarking and measuring environmental sustainability and economic sustainability. But there are few and far between those addressing the parameters for social sustainability. Thus the IFHP Social Cities initiative gauging the social sustainability of cities and communities.

And in keeping with Jan Gehl “we measure what we care about”, and if we care about the social mix and make-up of our cities and communities then let’s identify a comprehensive means of gauging the social sustainability on the scale of the household, neighborhood and citywide:

1.0 Household
- Affordability
- Availability
- Quality

2.0 Neighbourhood
- Safety
- Acess
- Social capital

3.0 City
- Job and education
- Mobility
- Citizenship

There is more to the city then bricks and mortar. IFHP Social Cities is a collaborative effort drawing on many sources gauging what we care about.

To implement for better cities of to-morrow we need indicators today!
