Still from film

In a basement workshop in New York City, a team of researchers is seeking to transform the future of architecture. The Natural Materials Lab conducts experiments merging the study of ancient earthen & fibre building systems, with 21st century techniques in engineering, analysis & production. From a mixture of play and scientific rigor, new methods of construction are being born, which aim to operate in harmony with the limitations and patterns of Earth itself.Speak to the Earth is a cinematic window into the daily practices and philosophies shaping materials development in architecture. Rooted in slow experimentation and collective inquiry, the film captures the embodied labor of working with earthen and agricultural waste materials. Reflecting ongoing research at Columbia University's Natural Materials Lab, the film portrays experiments that are at once technical, sensory, and ancestral.

A film by Benjamin Abrams, who is a documentary filmmaker based in Brooklyn, NY.

Year: 2025

The film will be introduced and followed by a Q&A with Lola Ben-Alon, Assistant Professor at Columbia GSAPP.

DA:
