Trace Matter: A Slow Encounter with the Urban Soil

This hands-on workshop explores soil chromatography as a slow, analog visual technique to read the stories embedded in urban soils. By extracting color patterns from local earth samples, participants engage with the material and non-human world (microbes, minerals, histories) through attentive observation. Inspired by artistic research practice “berl-birl,” we pause to listen to what soil reveals when we stop extracting and start relating. Participants will create their own chromatograms while reflecting on slowness as a way to mend systems, deepen urban knowledge, and cultivate care in the age of acceleration.

Denne praksisbaserede workshop udforsker jordkromatografi som en langsom, analog, visuel teknik til at læse de historier, der er indlejret i byens jord. Ved at udtrække farvemønstre fra lokale jordprøver engagerer deltagerne sig i den materielle og ikke-menneskelige verden (mikrober, mineraler, historier) gennem opmærksom iagttagelse. Inspireret af den kunstneriske forskningspraksis “berl-birl” standser vi op for at lytte til, hvad jorden afslører, når vi stopper med at udvinde og i stedet begynder at indgå i relation. Deltagerne skaber deres egne kromatogrammer, mens de reflekterer over langsomhed som en måde at hele systemer, uddybe byviden og fremme omsorg i accelerationens tidsalder.
