Show Me The Budget: The Invisible City discussion. Oct 6, 2025 at CAFx, Copenhagen. Gunhild Askehave & Christoffer Worm on hidden urban forces.
The city stands on an invisible carpet — thick, fuzzy, expensive, and unseen. A carpet that creeps under every house, every park, every neighborhood. This carpet comprises all power structures, conventions, and money that actually shape the city.
We tend to think of the city as a physical space — but increasingly, it is shaped by forces beyond the physical: the market, building codes, contract models, investment strategies, pension funds, tendering rules, land plot sizes.
We dedicate an evening to discussing everything that truly shapes the city — the invisible city. On stage, leading urban researchers, planners, and artists will share insights and concrete alternatives.
Speakers: Gunhild Askehave (Architect, Phd, researcher) & Christoffer Worm (Urban Anthropologist) & Lauge Floris/Atelier for Byers Rum (architects, urbanists, utopists)
Moderator: Anne-Laura Hedegaard

DA:

Poetik: Deceleration journal launch. Oct 6, 2025 at SUM, Copenhagen. First issue focusing on architectural deceleration through words & images.

Deceleration is a negative change in speed—the opposite of acceleration, which is when something moves (much) faster than before or increases rapidly. But more than just being a passive antithesis to acceleration, the first issue of Poetik focuses on the active act of decelerating through words and images that explore architectural processes in which care, reuse, maintenance, reversibility, and time are crucial parameters in the creation of architecture.

MorgenDAC discussion on nature understanding & climate crisis. Oct 6, 2025 at DAC, Copenhagen. With Cecilie Rubow & Alexander Holm. Danish event.
Naturen lider.

Copenhagen Year 2125: Municipal Election Key Issues in Deep Time. Oct 7, 2025 at CAFx, Copenhagen. With Jakob Næsager from Conservative Party.

Discover how daylight shapes Nordic architecture, boosts well-being, and powers the green transition in the Poetic Daylight pavilion.
The spatial qualities of daylight are unfolded in the 'Poetic Daylight' pavilion, where the perceptual, aesthetic, and poetic potential of daylight can be experienced in a series of spaces. We see the changeability of daylight - from morning to evening - and we experience how light, and darkness shape the spaces that surround us.
Daylight is essential in architecture - and an important factor for our well-being and health. Especially here in the Nordic region, where there are fewer hours of daylight. By utilizing daylight as the primary light source, we can contribute to the green transition while ensuring that we get the daylight we need.

Someone Lives Here: Housing injustice documentary. Oct 7, 2025 at Empire Bio. Toronto carpenter builds micro-shelters for homeless.
On housing injustice, civil disobedience and the right to shelter.
Amidst Toronto’s freezing winter and an escalating housing crisis, carpenter Khaleel Seivwright begins building insulated micro-shelters for people forced to sleep outside. His simple, hands-on response to a growing emergency draws international attention – and strong opposition from city authorities. Someone Lives Here is a powerful documentary about dignity, systemic failure, and who gets to shape the city.
Narrated by Taka, a woman living in one of the shelters, the film documents a deeply human struggle for survival and justice, while questioning why effective grassroots solutions are so often met with resistance.
The screening is introduced by Bo Heide-Jochimsen from Projekt UDENFOR, an organisation working with people experiencing homelessness in public space.
A film by Zack Russell,
year: 2023, length: 75 min.
Two short films; “Docking” and “Der er ikke plads til os”, will be shown in continuation of the film.

Explore how redesigning built environments can curb Aedes albopictus spread, protecting Europe from Zika and dengue by 2050.
Urbanisation, climate change, and global trade are expanding mosquito habitats. By 2050, much of Europe, including Denmark, is predicted to be suitable for Aedes albopictus, a vector for diseases such as Zika and dengue. With limited universal vaccines and concerns about overuse of insecticides, alternative approaches such as integrating preventative measures into the built environment are needed. This talk explores this by looking at the MBD-Free Project in Zanzibar. This transdisciplinary initiative investigates how adaptations to existing hospital buildings and outdoor spaces, co-created with a diverse range of stakeholders, could help reduce the risk of mosquito-borne disease transmission and support healthier built environments.

Explore how film techniques inspire atmospheric architecture. Join Morten Meldgaard & Sofie Stilling to learn cinematic design insights.
The tacit, or the black box, are just some of the names for the sensory and bodily dimensions of architecture, which are essential to place-based atmosphere. Though perception is subjective, atmospheres are often commonly shared. Since the early 20th century, filmmakers have mastered the art of conveying atmosphere. Urban environments and architecture have been carefully chosen or constructed for their atmospheric qualities to support an emotional tone, and their essence has been condensed into spatial experience. So, what can architects learn from film about conveying atmosphere? At the event, we will watch film clips and discuss cinematic techniques as inspiration for architects. Participants: Morten Meldgaard and Sofie Stilling.

This workshop explores the blending of folklore and native science understandings with practices of weaving and composting. We will investigate interrelations between non-modern worldviews and these ancient methods. The workshop objective is to empower participants through the exploration of potent, accessible and relevant blended practices that can foster alternative ways of ‘being-and-doing’ grounded upon principles of restoration, regeneration and slowing down.
Through the intersection of theory with hands-on practice with Kagome weaving and composting, participants will gain knowledge and skills that can act as a foundation for personal and community flourishing.

Guided tour of Red Block by entasis in Nordhavn. Dense, lush urban garden. Wheelchair accessible. Wed Oct 8, 14:30–16:00.
“Slowing down could mean smaller and deeper worlds," lyder det i CAFx’ program.
I Red Block sættes farten ned.
Den guidede tur er tilgængelig for kørestolsbrugere.

“Slowing down could mean smaller and deeper worlds," as stated in the CAFx programme. The architecture studio entasis invites you into their take on such a “small and deep world.” In Nordhavn’s vibrant new urban district, entasis has created a lush pocket of dense city life with the Red Block project. New structures have been built around the old, transforming and densifying an existing block of red-brick buildings. Restaurants, businesses, and housing ensure activity and a sense of safety around the clock. Between the buildings, an intense and verdant urban garden emerges.
Red Block demonstrates how we can build densely and make optimal use of urban space; how we can build with materials that age beautifully; how care in architectural design lends buildings longevity; and how we can create quality in the in-between spaces. In Red Block, the pace is slowed.
The guided tour is accessible to wheelchair users.

Join us for a conversation and screening of “The Garden Caretaker.”
We are currently witnessing various movements centered around the garden and the gardener. This attention likely stems from the way the garden and the gardener evoke an operational way of thinking—focused on temporality, sensuousness, and ecological practices—that generates new responses to global crises. Slowness and time are deeply embedded in the garden as a place and in the gardener’s practices. Through their work, Madeleine Kate McGowan, Emmy Laura Perez Fjalland, and Anna Aslaug Lund have explored the garden as a site and as a laboratory for new ideas about the relationship between humans, place, and ecologies.

Nordic roundtable on regenerative architecture: exploring biogenic materials, bio‑based construction, and nature‑inspired design.
This roundtable discussion brings together architects, artists and material developers to explore regenerative architecture and the potential of biogenic materials in the Nordic region.
How can we build in harmony with nature? How can we identify resources and develop bio-based materials that can be scaled within planetary boundaries?
The discussion will begin with short insights from Nordic representatives, sharing the current state of the biogenic field in their respective countries. This will be followed by four in-depth presentations from invited guests:
These presentations will provide the foundation for a collective roundtable discussion.
RIFT is an artistic research project exploring how we can build in symbiosis with nature, using biogenic materials sourced from the Nordic landscape. Through built examples, material samples and experimental prototypes, we map regenerative practices across the region and explore how local resources can shape an architecture that is ecological, tactile and deeply rooted in place.

Step into a fluffy encounter where wool takes center stage.
Join our guided visit of Fluffy Encounters and discover the many possibilities of wool—an age-old fibre being reimagined through co-creation, craftsmanship, and contemporary design. Meet the curators and collaborators, and explore how wool contributes to the growing movement of slow, circular, and local materials.
At the heart of the exhibition is a collective wool installation created during the Fluffy Encounters Wool Workshop, presented alongside material samples and products from selected Nordic designers. Together, they showcase a holistic and forward-looking approach to this versatile material.
Wool is soft, strong and renewable. Yet in the Nordics, more than half of all wool is discarded. Through slow processing and participatory making, the exhibition explores the resurgence of wool.

Show Me The Budget: The Slow City discussion. Oct 10, 2025 at CAFx, Copenhagen. Katrine Lotz & Jane Ostermann-Petersen on slow urban development.
Rome wasn’t built in a day. Not even in ten years. But Copenhagen’s new neighborhoods often are.
Blowing up planetary boundaries and local economies, we’re throwing up new cityscapes at record speed. As a result, our cities become flat. They often feel more like a backdrop than an organism—something that can adapt to the organisms living in it.
We dedicate an evening to examples and discussions on what we might gain by building cities slowly — and how we might actually do it. Slow down this Friday, in thoughtful company.
Speakers: Katrine Lotz (Architect, researcher, head of Institute of Archtecture, Urbanism and Landscape) & Jane Ostermann-Petersen (Artist, Designer) & Lauge Floris/Atelier for Byers Rum (architects, urbanists, utopists) Moderator: Anne-Laura Hedegaard

Explore hybrid fired/unfired clay walls in Holmen's former gunboat sheds—low‑carbon, robust, architecturally rich experiments by Jespersen Nødtvedt.
In the former Gunboat Sheds at Holmen, the architectural office Jespersen Nødtvedt is conducting ongoing experiments with clay through three full-scale mock-ups. The workshop is open to the public, offering insight into a series of material tests and spatial studies that explore clay as both fired and unfired, handmade and industrially produced - used wherever each form makes the most sense.
The project continues the office’s interest in homogeneous building techniques and the Danish tradition of hollow brick wall construction, while responding to today’s urgent need to reduce CO₂ emissions in material production. Rather than seeking an ultimate or purely “sustainable” solution, the investigations aim to combine the best properties of both fired and unfired clay into hybrid systems that are at once robust, low-impact, and architecturally rich.
Through drawings, models, and 1:1 mock-ups, the project tests ways of reintroducing clay into contemporary masonry construction in meaningful, contextually grounded ways. The office explores how different types of clay blocks - fired and unfired - might coexist in hybrid wall constructions that respect the logic of Danish masonry, where the wall’s thickness, texture, and performance vary continuously within a single, coherent material system.
Each mock-up acts as both experiment and argument: a fragment of a potential building, where clay is reconsidered not as nostalgia or novelty, but as a material of continuity and reinvention. The work questions where industrial production can meet craft, and how material honesty and structural simplicity can coexist with the demands of a low-carbon future.

Evening Without Borders - empowering architecture discussion. Oct 13, 2025 at CAFx, Copenhagen. Architects Without Borders event on solidarity.
How do we slow down architecture to harness its potential for solidarity? At the 2025 CAFx Biennale, Architects Without Borders invites you to an Evening Without Borders, where recent architecture graduates show how to trade quick fixes for patient, well-considered, empathetic solutions - and how time, proximity, and care can reshape design. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion on architecture for the vulnerable, where we’ll explore what to pause, reuse, and relearn so we can create human-centric architecture that truly cares for people. We welcome everyone working at the intersection of design and human development to learn, share, and be inspired with us.

Explore how architecture uses slow, reuse, and sensory design to inspire sustainable, socially rooted change.
EN:
How can architecture create awareness and change through materials, time, and care?
In this salon, Slaatto Morsbøl and Tom Svilans meet in a conversation about slowness, reuse, and the sensory dimension of building. Their two pavilions — Inside Out, Downside Up and Barn Again — both explore how architectural gestures can challenge the culture of demolition and new construction. Together, they discuss how ideas of repair, transformation, and tactile presence can support the HouseEurope! vision of a more sustainable and socially rooted built environment.

Deres to pavilloner — Inside Out, Downside Up og Barn Again — undersøger begge, hvordan arkitektoniske greb kan udfordre kulturen omkring nedrivning og nybyggeri.
In Bawa’s Garden, director Clara Kraft Isono takes us on a dreamlike journey through Sri Lanka in search of the architect Geoffrey Bawa’s elusive garden at Lunuganga. What begins as a road movie becomes a meditative reflection on architecture’s relationship to landscape, legacy, and time. Blending fiction, documentary, and quiet encounters with people and places shaped by Bawa’s vision, the film unfolds with the same layered elegance as Bawa’s own work—slow, immersive, and deeply attentive to detail.

The “Critical Zone” is what Earth system scientists call the thin outer layer of the Earth where living things and resources coexist. Traditional cartographic frameworks often fail to capture this complex theatre of built and natural, biotic and abiotic relationships. Phenomena like pollution, erosion, and biodiversity loss, also escape these frameworks due scale, time and lack of representation in standardized mapping. This lecture, inspired by the learning of Terra Forma’ - a 2022 book on alternative cartography and mapmaking - drawing manual, invites the audience to experience an alternative map of Copenhagen and its relationship with the local environment – from the water and the rocks below the ground to the atmosphere above.

DAN:

La Bonga: Film about memory, displacement & return. Oct 15, 2025 at Gloria Biograf. Colombian community symbolic return after 20+ years.
In 2001, the entire population of the Colombian town La Bonga fled overnight after receiving a death threat from paramilitary forces. More than two decades later, the displaced community sets out on a symbolic return to reclaim the land and history they were forced to abandon.
La Bonga is a powerful and poetic documentary about memory, violence, and resilience. As the villagers walk through dense jungle to the ruins of their former home, the film becomes both a collective act of remembrance and a portrait of the ties between people and place.
The film will be introduced by Alma Nygaard Aspen of Architects Without Borders
Year: 2023
Length: 77 min.
Language Spanish with English subtitles.

Experience architect Christian Hansen’s striking buildings and hear the story of his journey from ancient Athens to the architectural diversity of Copenhagen.
In 1857, Christian Hansen returned to Copenhagen after nearly 20 years in Athens, where he worked for the Greek king and became a leading figure in the country’s reconstruction. His reinterpretation of classical architecture had a significant impact on modern Greece. To the surprise of many, he did not bring the classical Greek style back with him to Copenhagen. Instead, he introduced Byzantine architecture and mixed the styles of the time in his works.
On this walking tour, you’ll see his buildings as a living textbook of architectural history – from Romanesque and Gothic to Byzantine style to modern glass facades.

As the municipal election campaign rolls on with slogans, speed, and short-term promises, we press the pause button and invite you to a series of public conversations that, in the midst of the political noise, slow down the pace and switch on the long-range headlights: What do the top candidates’ key issues mean for the future of Copenhagen – not just in 5 or 10 years, but also in 50, 100, or 200 years?
In this third edition, you can meet Christopher Røhl from Radikale Venstre.
Together with Byplanlaboratoriet, Copenhagen Architecture Biennial invites you to conversations about democracy, planning, and responsibility that reach far beyond the time frame of an election term. With a selection of urban development experts, we will explore and test what consequences the top candidates’ respective key issues may have for the city’s future.
The conversations will be hosted by urbanist and author Niels Bjørn, and Tina Saaby, director of Byplanlaboratoriet and former city architect of Copenhagen and Gladsaxe. In addition, various experts on the different key issues will be invited into the discussion.
