A Wooden Barn in Transformation

Open House
Credit:

Slow down by taking a trip back in time and experiencing a forgotten and hidden wooden barn and its unique raw wooden structures and at the same time, get a glimt of a possible new future for the barn.

A Unique Timber Construction

In the heart of Sundholm stands a quietly dignified structure – a timber barn built in 1907, one of Copenhagen's few remaining examples of timber construction with a tiled roof. Although it bears the marks of time, it has large cultural significance and spatial potential.

We need to build less and renovate more rather than build new. The buildings that have already been built need to be used for longer and in new ways.
Therefore Municipality of Copenhagen and Områdefornyelsen Sønderbro visions, is to bring this building back to life, and are currently working on, transforming the barn into a welcoming, flexible and inspiring environment that brings people together across generations and backgrounds. A place where everyday life unfolds in many forms: from informal meetings and children's games to communal dining, creative workshops, exhibitions and quiet moments for reflection.

The Future of the Barn

A first step towards The Halldor Gunnløgssons Foundation is holding an architectural competition for architecture students, where the task is to propose a new function and future for the barn as a local public central meeting place.
During the open house, there will be an opportunity to see the three winning proposals from the Halldor Gunnløgssons Foundation's architectural competition 2025. The exhibited projects will provide an insight into this year's assignment "Sundholm Kvarterhus - The Living Barn" and show how students have approached the challenge with different architectural approaches and ideas.
