In 1857, Christian Hansen returned to Copenhagen after nearly 20 years in Athens, where he worked for the Greek king and became a leading figure in the country’s reconstruction. His reinterpretation of classical architecture had a significant impact on modern Greece. To the surprise of many, he did not bring the classical Greek style back with him to Copenhagen. Instead, he introduced Byzantine architecture and mixed the styles of the time in his works.
