This panel brings together four female thinkers and practitioners—designers, historians, and scholars—whose work centers on material and embodied forms of knowledge. Framed through the lens of slowness, the conversation will explore themes of domesticity, care, and non-industrial, non-commodified materials, techniques, and labor.

Envisioned as a collaborative thought by the Columbia Natural Materials Lab and CAFx, the panel will ask: What genealogies of slowness have emerged alongside industrial and technological shifts? How can tactile, immersive engagements with “messy” materials resist the abstraction of digital culture? And what roles do time, temporality, and pace play in imagining architectures beyond extraction and automation?

Panelists:

Kate Orff, landscape architect and Founder of SCAPE, Bonnie Hvillum, Founder and Creative Director of Natural Material Studio, Nikoline Dyrup Carlsen, Architect, Founding partner and Director of SPACON&X and Lola Ben-Alon, Assistant Professor Columbia University, GSAPP, Director, Natural Materials Lab.

DA:
