Eight Deadly Shots

In the snowy Finnish wilderness, the poor farmer Pasi tries to make a living for himself and his small family. He works as a day laborer, felling trees and engaging in a variety of hard physical labor, while also falling in and out of a fairly solid supply of the moonshine he brews with a friend. His wife has to endure the consequences of his drinking, and more than once, the police have had to come out and talk him down. Slowly, the amount of snow increases until one day, eight deadly shots are fired.

Eight Deadly Shots is a national treasure in Finland. A five-hour opus that was initially broadcast as a four-part series on national television. It is based on a real incident in which a Finnish man shot and killed four police officers in 1969. It's an uncompromising and raw film that never falls into romanticizing or pitying its main character. It's just the tough, universal story of a man with hangovers who constantly has his back against the wall.

Mikko Niskanen directed, wrote, and produced the movie himself. He also stars as the drunken, confused, and disgruntled Pasi, who carries the film in his increasingly tired, moist, and ravaged face. Eight Deadly Shots is nothing more than a masterpiece.

Eight Deadly Shots
