On legacy, learning, and architecture for the many.

A cinematic journey through the life and work of Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi, a Pritzker Prize laureate and a pioneer of sustainable, socially engaged architecture. Known for his collaborations with Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, Doshi developed an architecture rooted in local materials, climate, and culture – always with people at the centre.

Filmed in the final years of his life, The Promise follows the architect as he revisits his most important projects, reflects on his legacy, and shares moments with those closest to him. It is a gentle yet powerful tribute to one of modern architecture’s most compassionate voices.

A film by Jan Schmidt-Garre

The film will be introduced by architect Mette Lange, who has worked in India for a great part of her career.

year: 2023, length: 90 min.
