In collaboration with re:arc institute, we present this audio walk and invite you to explore the material traces of Denmark’s colonial history in the city centre of Copenhagen, interweaving past and present narratives in a polyphonic soundscape embedded within the architecture. Produced by Voices in the Shadows of Monuments this audio walk will take the walking listener on a journey back in time and unfolds a dark chapter of Danish colonial history including financially beneficial sugar plantations and slavery when the Danish kingdom spanned as far as the West Indies. The profits from the plantations very much supported the development of the Copenhagen cityscape in the form of buildings and monuments which are still visible today both physical and mentally.
