A rose pergola, an orangery, and a labyrinthine beech hedge – it sounds like a palace park, but in fact, it’s a private, enclosed courtyard right next to Blågårdsplads in Nørrebro. Get a taste of its charm during Open House.
Behind the Concert Church on Blågårds Plads lies a large courtyard garden that winds its way around the church. The church’s arched windows and serene elevation give the courtyard a very special atmosphere.
When you step into the courtyard, you’re greeted by a romantic space with neatly trimmed beech hedges and a rose pergola. The hedges create an almost labyrinth-like experience, with many small inner rooms filled with grass, benches, and fruit trees. Further into the garden, the character changes. The space opens up and comes alive with summer activity. Here you’ll find a greenhouse, planter boxes, garden chairs, pots, berry bushes, knick-knacks, and play equipment.
During the 1980s, Inner Nørrebro underwent urban renewal. As early as 1977, the first rear building in the Kirkekarré was demolished, and in the early 1980s most of the courtyard was cleared, with parts of the perimeter buildings replaced by new residential blocks. At the same time, we’re right in the heart of Nørrebro – where it all began. In fact, it was in 1820 that Blågården was subdivided, marking the first steps toward the Nørrebro we know today.
In the Kirkekarré, the result of the renewal was a courtyard garden that is sure to spark envy – large, yet full of many charming small spaces. See it for yourself during Open House, when you are invited behind the closed gate.
