Unboxing The Black Box – What we can we learn about the atmospheres of our urban landscapes from film

The tacit, or the black box, are just some of the names for the sensory and bodily dimensions of architecture, which are essential to place-based atmosphere. Though perception is subjective, atmospheres are often commonly shared. Since the early 20th century, filmmakers have mastered the art of conveying atmosphere. Urban environments and architecture have been carefully chosen or constructed for their atmospheric qualities to support an emotional tone, and their essence has been condensed into spatial experience. So, what can architects learn from film about conveying atmosphere? At the event, we will watch film clips and discuss cinematic techniques as inspiration for architects.
