Peter Nestlers dokumentarfilm om industrialiseringens effekt på samiske samfund.

“Hvad er det, han gør? Tydeligvis det letteste og sværeste i verden. Han peger sit kamera mod huse, gader, på mennesker. Foran vores øjne former en verden sig,” skrev den franske filmskaber Jean-Marie Straub engang om tyske Peter Nestlers dokumentarfilm. Der er en særegen ydmyghed i Nestlers tilgang til filmmediet og de verdener, han filmer. Nestler interesserer sig for strukturelle ændringer i rurale og industrielle områder, men han forsøger aldrig at tvinge pointer ned over billederne. Han har tillid til, at billederne nok selv skal beslutte, hvilke historier de vil fortælle, og hvilke de vil holde hemmelige. I ’The North Calotte’ skildrer han med både distance og indlevelse, hvordan industrialiseringen har påvirket de samiske samfund og Nordeuropas landskaber.
