En opsigtsvækkende blanding af etiopiske bønder, lokale myndigheder og internationale arkitekter går sammen for at påbegynde byggeriet af en lille landsby, der rummer et stort løfte: en vej ud af dét problemkompleks, der knytter sig til en verden, hvor landområder affolkes, mens storbyer overbefolkes. Urban Genesis er en film, der higer efter et korrektiv til retorikken om fremtidens megabyer og en øvelse i at se mulighederne i en mere beskeden småskala-urbanisering, som i højere grad ligger i forlængelse af lokale traditioner og levevis. Det bliver en aften om et af vores største globale udfordringer og om dén arkitektur, der måske kan hjælpe os i den rigtige retning.

Filmen introduceres af arkitekt Anna Sofie Hvid. Hun er uddannet fra Forensic Architecture Goldsmiths University og grundlægger af non-profit rådgivningsvirksomheden og tegnestuen Rural Agency, der arbejder med begrebet ruralitet og det rurale rum som et kontroversielt og komplekst - men også helt essentielt - rumligt begreb.
