Democratic Republic of the Congo
the Warka Village
The Bagyeli Pygmies live in social structures in the Congo Basin rainforest. But because of commercial and political interest in Cameroon more and more of the forest is lost and thus their natural habitat and livelyhood is marginalized. Concerned by this, Italian architect Arturo Vittori is building the Warka Village, that could be a model for reintegration into the forest. He only uses materials from the forest and created an architecture that is inspired by traditional Bagyeli traditions and the harmony with the forest and its people.

Material Agency
The film aims at showcasing the diversity of bench design, the use of the bench as well as dismantling the more hostile effects of certain bench designs. It is an investigation of a banal object that we all have an experience with and which we all interact with in our everyday life. The film highlights how the built environment is embedded with a series of material objects and non-human entities that interfere with questions of inclusivity and exclusivity. Furthermore, these non-human objects that seek to perform certain actions will contain some degree of ambivalence, in the sense they will be inclusive fore some actions (and people), while for others the contrary.

Gjelltor-ism
This hidden place is enclosed by skyscrapers and the continuous transformations of Tirana. We had the honour of being part of Dashira’s daily routine for a week. Her Gjelltore became for us a way to explore the identity of the neighbourhood: the needs, the hopes and the preoccupations of its citizens. Her dedication to keeping this place open to serve workers, passersby and old acquaintances restores a precise sense of belonging against the fast pace of the city. Every day, tiny spontaneous gestures of care turn this small canteen into a gentle place of resistance. We learned from Dashira’s Gjelltore how to grasp the mechanism of relationships and place-making. This is a shared space, where you are able to count on a warm meal, a point of reference open seven days a week: in one word a recipe for community building. Gjelltor-ism is our method to interact with the urban environment - a new tool to trigger alternative futures for sensible city planning.
