Birkegade Rooftop - Sunday

Open House

A leaky roof became a playful green retreat atop an old Nørrebro building — and now you’re invited in, as Open House opens the gates to the rooftop garden on Birkegade. Come and experience a unique, recreational green space in one of the densest areas of Copenhagen.

It’s not something you’d spot — unless you knew it was there. At least not from the street below on Birkegade, in the heart of trendy Nørrebro. But high above, a green oasis unfolds with views over the city’s rooftops. The rooftop garden is usually reserved for residents of the building, but now you have the chance to explore one of Nørrebro’s hidden — and most unique — urban spaces. A secret garden.

From leaky roof to green rooftop garden

It all started with a leaky roof. The residents of the housing cooperative dreamed of having an outdoor space — something their backyard couldn’t offer. They wanted better conditions for urban living and more child-friendly homes. With help from JDS Architects, a lush rooftop garden was created: an oasis with a grassy hill, a wooden deck with a barbecue and outdoor kitchen, and a vibrant orange activity area with a soft sports surface.

Climb a building

The rooftop terrace sits at the 7th–8th floor level and is only accessible via the two main staircases — so be ready for a bit of a climb, as there’s no elevator. But like with any ascent, the reward awaits at the top. Open House at the Birkegade rooftop is a rare opportunity to see how the city’s 100-year-old buildings can still provide amazing spaces for life, leisure, and community.

Registration is required.
