Guided Tour of Medical Museion

Open House
Credit:

In the heart of Frederiksstaden, the beautiful, classically inspired building from 1787—originally home to the Royal Surgical Academy—now houses the Medical Museion.

The museum is surrounded by the historic buildings of Denmark’s first hospital, the former Frederiks Hospital, which today is known as Designmuseum Danmark.

Buildings of Medical History

During Open House you will be able to participate in a guided tour through the medical history that the building is housing.

The tour starts in the Auditorium – an architectural masterpiece by Peter Meyn with visual references to the Pantheon. Today the building is a museum and the tour focuses on perceptions of the body and understandings of disease from antiquity to modern-day genetics, from earlier humoral theories to today’s chemical analyses. Here you get a broad outline of medical history set in rooms that formerly held students studying surgery as well as the professor's residence. Hear about the history of surgery in Denmark, about bloodletting and intestinal irrigation as well as older ideas of what caused cholera.
