Minamata: The Victims and Their World

En rystende dokumentarisk skildring af et af de værste tilfælde af miljøforurening i Japan siden 2. verdenskrig.

Den anerkendte japanske dokumentarist Noriaki Tsuchimoto dedikerede størstedelen af sit filmiske virke til skildringen af Minamata-tragedien. Fra 1953 til 1968 udledte gødningsfirmaet Chisso tonsvis af kviksølvfyldt spildevand i havet udenfor den lille fiskerby Minamata. Områdets økosystem blev nedbrudt, og tusindvis af mennesker fik varige mén eller døde af kviksølvforgiftning. ’Minamata: The Victims and Their World’ var Noriaki Tsuchimotos første film om Minamata. Den er ikke blot en chokerende og socialengageret dokumentation af måden, hvorpå sygdommen påvirkede Minamatas indbyggere på, men den er samtidig også et portræt af, hvordan katastrofen ændrede byens funktion og infrastruktur.

Filmen introduceres af arkitekt David Garcia, der blandt andet er ansvarlig for arkitektskolens master-program Architecture and Extreme Environments, på Det Kongelige Akademi – Arkitektur, Design, Konservering.
