På en sommeraften i Paris er gaden stedet for det erotiske møde, for begæret og tilfældet. 

Det er årets varmeste aften, og Paris’ gader er fyldt op af en trafikprop. De to fremmede Jean og Laure kan hverken komme ud eller hjem, så i stedet tilbringer de aftenen i hinandens selskab, i et helt særligt kærlighedslimbo som opstår på de kaotiske gader. Claire Denis lavede Vendredi Soir i 2002, efter hun for alvor var brudt igennem med den unikke Beau Travail, og derefter havde chokeret med vampyrfilmen Trouble Every Day. Med Vendredi Soir lavede hun sin hidtil varmeste film, og beviste at hendes unikt registrerende og detaljerede filmsprog også kunne bruges til en lille personlig fortælling.

Gaden er både det modernes grundlag og problem; et motiv, så dybt indridset i kulturens fortællinger og billeder, at angrebet og forsvaret for gaden har været en hundredeårs-motor i den vestlige arkitektur- og modernitetsteori.
